Only the strong will survive – how Amicia and Hugo’s abilities will change in A Plague Tale: Requiem – PlayStation.

The game released on October 18 on PlayStation 5, three years after its prequel, Innocence. Time has passed, and for our two heroes, Amicia and Hugo, we will meet in Requiem six months after we say goodbye to them in Innocence. Both are children, subject to constant change, so you can expect them to change! And that will affect how you play with them… Let’s take a look at it now.

The end of innocence

Hugo and Amicia had to evolve a lot, and evolve quickly to face the challenges that life put before them. They are facing the extreme cruelty of the times, and experiencing atrocities and events far greater than they are. So their personalities and their abilities develop in the process. Amicia learns to fight and kill, and Hugo learns to use her powers. And that’s not all about physical skills, it also means dealing with the morality of their actions and the damage that violence can cause.

After the events of Innocence, Amicia became more and more diligent in combat. This is made clear when looking at her new weapon set, which includes not only an improved version of the sling she is using in Innocence, but also a crossbow – a weapon of war.

Hugo is really just a spectator at the start of Innocence, exploring the world and marveling at everything. But he becomes active when he becomes aware of the danger: he has an extraordinary power that he begins to use at the end of Innocence, and he continues that path in Requiem.

So our two heroes have grown up, and they’re ready for action. But there is a lot to ask the two children, and taking on these roles means developing a sense of darkness. That will be part of how they can use their abilities: weighing their actions and the level of darkness they enter will be key to overcoming.

Amicia’s ability

Learning to control yourself will be one of Amicia’s main challenges. Her heartbreak resurfaces and she must face how far she can go to protect her brother. Her struggle to learn and accept the use of force and murder may have led her to develop a preference for it. Requiem constantly puts her in a position to question the limits of her survival and protective instincts. She has hesitated in the past, but the risk of her diving into violence is real.

This internal conflict comes as threats become wilder. In Innocence, the opponents are the Inquisition and British soldiers, which are quite tightly organized. In Requiem, Amicia and Hugo will face more violent and unpredictable mercenaries and smugglers. Our team has put a lot of effort into designing their intelligence and response to each situation. Amicia’s potential to adapt to moves will really challenge players!

Amicia will need to manage this risk of escalation and that will be done by the agency that provides players with access to situations and their resolution. The range of tools she can use will only expand, with new alchemy recipes, her improved strap, and a crossbow. But more importantly, a whole new space dynamic will be introduced.

Amicia will rely heavily on environment-specific resources and make it her strongest asset. She will develop guerrilla approaches to surprise and harass their opponents, using what’s available in the environment to her advantage, from tarps to slow enemies to tall grass. can burn. In terms of gameplay, this translates into much more open encounters than we’ve had in Innocence, in keeping with the much larger environment introduced in this new chapter. That means danger can be approached in many unique ways, in a context where there is so much to explore. You can create your own combination of alchemy, stealth, and action — use a knife in hand-to-hand combat if that happens! This not only allows for avoidance of escalation if done well, but also allows for Amicia and Hugo’s evolution, from a more vulnerable survival attitude to increased confidence in the face of enemies. .

Hugo’s ability

Hugo’s supernatural powers perfectly embody the duality between the souls of their children and the huge stakes for which he and his sister are responsible. There’s a fierce dimension brought on by the rats, which is an essential aspect of the game: there’s this massive, unstoppable force that’s terrifying but it must fight to survive.

The risk of Hugo losing control while fighting it made it all the more terrifying. We had to witness it in Innocence, and it became an important threat in Requiem. He can destroy an entire city…! We are reaching a scale of threat and fear that was not possible at Innocence’s time.

Psychologically, there is an important effect of using his powers: Hugo is able to share the perceptions and emotions of rats… Each time, it hurts him a little bit more. . That also affects the player’s experience and teaches them to be cautious. At the same time, there is a certain evil pleasure in unleashing this power… but consequences follow and a price to pay! It’s a story of moral dilemmas, with Macula’s progress and the lives of those Hugo loved at stake.
