On Dirt and Turf, Constitution Makes Its Mark in 2024

Two weeks ago, a small change was noted in the overall Sires List—eight stallions in the top 25 were in a different position than they had been previously. The horse with the biggest change was not in the top 25 before that last test. The remaining seven horses did not move up or down more than two places.

Oh my gosh, things have changed.

The tables have turned and all but the top five stallions in North America have changed places. Two stallions whose moves have caught our attention are Candy spinner who rose seven places from No. 14 to No. 7 thanks in part to Kilwin claim the $1 million Untapable Stakes prize on September 8.

That is Structure who has risen two places to secure a spot in the top five. Currently ranked fifth by offspring earnings this year, the stud has shown versatility this year to secure this prestigious position. The son of Knock on the door sold this year at WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky., for $110,000.

American Revolution He pocketed nearly $1 million on the track, and his 201 stallions averaged $56,539 in annual earnings, the best annual average of his progeny to date. With more than $10 million in earnings from his progeny that year, Constitution once again led his class. The top stallion of the third crop also had the most race winners and black stallions.

After steady years in 2022 and 2023, where Constitution finished 12th and then 14th in the overall stallion list, he has picked up speed again this year.

He had his best year in earnings ($11,611,723) and his offspring’s average winnings were up nearly $2,000 from last year. Among his sixth-crop peers, he leads in graded race winners as well as black-type runners and winners.

His runners are showing versatility on the surface. Constitution’s progeny has earned the most on turf ($4.78 million), placing him fourth among turf sire this year after finishing 14th in 2023. Leading that attack is Succinct who has three graded race wins to his name—the Transylvania race (G3T), the American Turf (G2T), and the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame race (G2T).

A promising 2-year-old for the Constitution is Chasing Freedom Juvenile Turf Sprint winner at Kentucky Downs. This colt was perfect in two starts, both on turf, for prize money of $639,495.
