Dreamfyre Blazes Gate to Wire in Sorrento

After trouncing males in her stakes-winning debut last time out, Dreamfyre  went one better in an emphatic gate-to-wire score in the $201,000 Sorrento Stakes (G3) Aug. 12 at Del Mar.

With her 3 1/2-length victory, the 2-year-old Flameaway   filly provided her owner, trainer, and first-crop sire with their first graded stakes wins.

Dreamfyre’s connections knew speed was going to be her weapon, and after some sharp breezes, trainer O. J. Jauregui did not hesitate to enter the filly against stakes company first time out at Pleasanton. A winner of the July 9 Everett Nevin Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths in frontrunning fashion, Dreamfyre employed similar tactics in the Sorrento, running her highly regarded rivals off their feet in a sharp 1:10.52 for six furlongs.

“We only had like five works in her (ahead of her stakes win in the Everett Nevin) and O. J. Jauregui said why don’t we just try it,” said owner Danny Eplin, who bought Dreamfyre for $140,000 at this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. “We weren’t sure what to expect in the stakes but she ran really well and O.J. said the next progression was the Sorrento and here we are. We’re impressed with her.”

Guided by Hector Issac Berrios, Dreamfyre ($9.20) set quick fractions of :21.74 and :45.10 on an uncontested lead before turning back a bid from favored Benedetta  down the lane.
