NYC’s vaccine plan for children under the age of 5 relies on pediatricians and vaccine centers.

Health officials in New York City are preparing to distribute the vaccine to children under the age of 5 starting June 22, according to a new plan announced Friday by Mayor Eric Adams.

The plan, which relies on federal action for Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for very young children, will rely on pediatricians’ offices and 10 vaccine centers in the city to deliver the vaccines.

Mr. Adams said in a statement.

Starting June 21, parents can use Website “Vaccine Finder” to schedule an appointment at several types of locations. The mayor’s office said clinics that already serve children 5 years of age and older will transition to vaccinating younger children. Ten vaccine centers, including locations in Times Square, Queens Mall and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, will offer the Moderna vaccine to young children. The Pfizer vaccine will also be available at other locations.

Moderna’s two-dose vaccine is for kids 6 months to 5 years old, while Pfizer’s three-dose vaccine is for kids 6 months to 4 years old.

Health officials encourage parents to contact their child’s doctor to ask if they are vaccinated. The city’s health department has conducted an “educational outreach” to pediatricians’ offices and says some families may feel more comfortable getting vaccines from a trusted provider.

The mayor’s plan depends on federal clearance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where the advisory panel will meet Friday and Saturday. On Friday, The Food and Drug Administration has approved the Pfizer and Moderna . vaccines for young children.

More than 88 percent of adults in New York City are fully immunized, but only about 60 percent of children ages 5 to 17 are fully immunized. according to city data. Childhood immunization rates are highest in Manhattan – about 92 percent of children have received a single dose — and lowest in Staten Island, where only 54 percent of children have received a single dose.

The city’s health commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, said in a statement that vaccines for children under the age of 5 are safe and provide protection against the virus and serious complications.

“As the city’s doctor, and as a father of a 3-year-old, I believe in this vaccine and I can’t wait to get my child vaccinated,” he said.
