NY state considers mandatory COVID vaccination for healthcare workers
SYRACUSE, NY — The New York State Department of Health is “exploring its options” after a state Supreme Court judge overturned a statewide mandate requiring healthcare workers to inject COVID-19 vaccine, the agency said Saturday.
Judge Gerard Neri wrote in a ruling released Friday that Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and the health department exceeded their authority by mandating the use of a vaccine that is not covered by health law. state public sector, the Syracuse Post-Standard reported.
The judge said the mandate was “worthless, void and without effect”.
The mission is to protect those most at risk of severe symptoms and those who care for them, the health agency said in a statement to the Associated Press.
“This request is an important public health tool,” the agency said. “The State Department of Health strongly disagrees with the judge’s decision and is exploring its options.”
