Not long after the transplant, owner Ramsey turned to raising horses
One hour after leaving the operating room after kidney transplant surgery, Ken Ramsey’s attention focused on the June 20 program at Gulfstream ParkWhere clear copper racing under his familiar white and red colors in race number 6.
“My mom was up there with him. She texted that he asked if the horse had run yet,” nephew and trainer Nolan Ramsey in the Gulfstream winner’s circle said after riding Clear Copper to a 4 1/2-length maiden victory. “An hour after surgery and he was asking about the horses, so you know he’s feeling okay. To be able to win the race for him today was special.”
Ramsey said his 88-year-old grandfather’s surgery went smoothly at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
“He was very excited about being the oldest kidney transplant ever performed,” Ramsey said.
Ken Ramsey, who won the owner’s title at the 2023-24 Championship Meet at Gulfstream Park, has won the Eclipse Award four times as an outstanding owner with his late wife Sarah .
