Nissan R36 GT-R: Godzilla can develop into a family electric car

The Nissan GT-CHEAP has grown considerably over its lifetime, but its biggest leap may yet to come.

Japanese website Best Car Web says the next GT-R, likely to be called the R36, will launch in 2028.

Instead of a turbocharged six-cylinder, the Japanese outlet claims the next GT-R will be equipped with an electric powertrain and a solid-state battery. We bet the powertrain will be all-wheel drive, given the melted traction from the advanced all-wheel drive system that has become a GT-R staple.

Along with the switch from gasoline engine to electric motor, R36 can see GT-R adopt the same four-door body style as Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT.

There was precedent for the four-door GT-R, with a sedan body style offered in several generations of the Skyline GT-R.

Nissan has made a significant bet on solid-state batteries, and previous reviews indicate that the first vehicle equipped with potentially game-changing technology for the brand will launch in 2028.

Earlier this year, it officially announced its prototype solid-state battery production facility at its Research Center in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

As announced at the Nissan Ambition 2030 event in November 2021, Nissan is aiming to launch an electric vehicle (EV) with its proprietary all-solid-state battery (ASSB) by fiscal year 2028.

Nissan plans to set up a test production line at its production plant in Yokohama by fiscal year 2024 using materials, design and manufacturing processes from its prototype production facility.

It says the cost of solid-state batteries could drop to $75 per kWh in fiscal year 2028 and to $65 per kWh thereafter, which would put the cost of ASSB-equipped vehicles on par with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Nissan has also previously announced it leading developer of solid-state batteries for its Alliance partnersRenault and Mitsubishi.

At the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance roadmap 2030, the Alliance said it plans to spend 23 billion euros ($33.38 billion) over the next five years on electrification and hopes to reach a total capacity of 220GWh battery production for electric vehicles by 2030.
