New Subaru Crosstrek spy image shows evolutionary design

Last year, Subaru Crosstrek is the brand’s third best seller, behind only forester and Remote. It also sold more than twice as much as Impreza it is based on. So it’s no surprise that the next-generation model (or at least a vastly improved model) is shown in spy photo hardly any difference. Or at least that is the case at first glance. Looking closer, there are many small updates.

At the front, the most obvious update is the grille. It has a larger size and thicker mesh with larger openings, seemingly inspired by the Wilderness decor details of the forester and Remote. The cladding in the corners of the bumper appears to be reshaped. They seem to protrude more under the headlights and are a bit more sculptural.

Along the sides, Crosstrek retains its large fender flares. The front now has small vents that remind us of the ones above New WRX. They look as if they could work, too. The overall look is very similar, but one sign that it’s really a different body is the new upside-down window sill right around the side mirrors. The roof rails are also new, they look more solid and stand out. We doubt they can be upgraded for rooftop tent duties like Wilderness Subarus.

The rear of the car has the most noticeable changes. The taillights are a bit larger and have the new C-shape of other recent Subarus. The lights also protrude further from the body, and give the rear of the car a wider look. The rear bumper has also been changed, now there are some more air intakes. It’s still covered in thick pieces from what we can tell.

The prototype looks quite finished and is testing in thin camouflage, so we expect to see the car revealed next year, with sales coming soon after that. Powertrains are a mystery, but there’s a good chance the current model’s 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter four-cylinder options will be carried over, with the CVT available for both engines and a six-speed manual transmission. available for the 2.0 liter engine. And of course, all-wheel drive will be standard.
