New Oaks favorite Emily Upjohn
The painting Cazoo Oaks (G1) was put up by Emily Upjohn who was slashed to the best price of 6-4 for the Epsom Classic after burning down the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (G3) home on May 11 in York.
Defeated 4-7 for one of the key challenges for the June 3 race, Emily Upjohn was compared to coach John Gosden’s past Epsom heroines with complete success. excelled under Frankie Dettori.
Concerned about being stuck a little too wide in the early stages, daughter of Sea The Stars catch up with her and progress further as she goes further, suggesting that stepping up a mile and sixteen at Epsom will play to her strengths.
“She did it very quickly and really couldn’t have done any better,” says Gosden. “I have a lot of respect for the field and it’s been a very solid performance. She’s a lovely chubby and she’s learned a lot about life today.
“She was naked and she settled in after a long time and found a lovely rhythm. It was the first time she saw a crowd around and she was a bit irritable. She wore a red hood and we’ll keep that and she loves to show off and enjoy herself.
“She comes from an Aga Khan family and has a lot of stamina there. The mile and a half will be right down her alley and where she’ll likely stay after this.”
Emily Upjohn, named after a character from the Marx brothers’ film A Day at the Races, plays another lead role after her explosive victory in Sandown Nordoff Robbins Charlie Watts Memorial Fillies Novice Stakes last month.
“She cares but she’s controlling – you want her to be,” he said. “The ground is a lot deeper than you think and everyone is struggling from four out. From two and a half to the victory post, I’ve never seen another horse and she won in good shape.
“At this stage, Allow won over Chester and she’s probably in the same park. Every race she improved and she won the five-stage test, so I’m happy. We’ve always liked her from day one. “
After missing One Thousand Guineas (G1) with longtime post favorite Inspire The Classic campaign was a nasty one for Clarehaven Stables, but Emily Upjohn lifted spirits and entered St James’s Palace (G1) Samburu gave them another reason to smile at the following 7 feather handicap win.
“It’s a lovely couple,” Gosden said. “Going to York on New Year’s Day and having a great double.”
