New generation World Supersport motorcycles and their weight limits
The next generation of World Supersport
While the technical rules that apply to the 300 World Supersport Championship remain unchanged for 2022, we are on the cusp of a whole new generation of World Supersport Tournaments.
Dubbed the ‘Next Generation Supersport’, the class has now removed the longstanding limits of 600 cc for the four-cylinder, 675 cc for the three and 750 cc for the twins. It’s always been relatively simple for you to understand, but the new interface of the World Sports Championship is a lot more complicated…
The Ducati Panigale V2 955 cc motorcycle will debut and compete with the Triumph Street Triple RS 765 cc, MV Agusta F3 800 798 cc and Suzuki’s GSX-R750. The 636 cc version of the ZX-6R will qualify in 2023 under the current plan.
We believe Yamaha’s YZF-R6 and Honda’s CBR600RR will keep the existing 600 cc displacement, but if they start to fall behind the new generation machines, the organizers will allow them to fix it. more performance changes to help correct the trade-off.
Performance balance will include Concession Section, Torque Limit Map with RPM Limiter,
Minimum weight, air limiter and modifications allowed.
For motorcycles such as the GSX-R750, where a wired control system is not standard on the motorcycle, they must be equipped with a control throttle body system authorized by Dorna. This allows all motorcycles to be performance balanced through torque mapping.
Simply put, the organizers can pull power/torque from all the motorcycles in the championship at different revs to assist them in their efforts to provide a fair playing field. equal. Brave this new world…
We also have weight limits established on a combined basis of the rider (with full racing gear) and the motorcycle, with minimum limits also applicable. All machines have a minimum aggregate weight of 239 kg, with the exception of the largest engine motorcycle available today, the 955 cc Ducati, which must have a minimum total weight of 244 kg.
In fact, it looks like we’re going to have two championships run in the same race. A regular World Supersport terrier that we are familiar with, but also the new Next Generation class fighting in their own battles.
It looks like it might be a bit messy in regards to parity balancing, but let’s hope it makes for a great race! And of course we’ll have Oli Bayliss and Ben Currie to cheer on! Action gets underway at Aragon over the weekend of April 10.
