Australian Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce mocked the UK climate summit host for being emotional about reducing language on coal and trying to “shut down industries in other people’s countries”.

With the Australian government under pressure to agree for the first time to an existing 2030 target review flag statement ahead of Cop27 in Egypt – only to dismiss the same scenario hours later. That – Barnaby Joyce on Monday began the political attack.

Joyce told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Monday that the Australian government had done a “great job” to protect coal miners’ jobs before continuing to mock Sharma.

“You know, that annoys me… what’s his name? Is that the chairman Sharma in Glasgow,” Joyce told ABC. “He’s holding his hammer and oh, I’m almost crying, I can’t do this.”

The Australian political leader also said that Sharma had demonstrated a double standard. “He wanted to shut down our coal industry but he never talked about closing the North Sea oil fields, Brent oil, you know he didn’t want to close.”

If Barnaby Joyce stands his ground on Net Zero, then I will celebrate his criticism of COP26. But recently supported by Joyce for Net Zero, in my opinion, his criticism of COP26 is purely political theater, designed to try to play both sides, to regain some of the respect that Joyce lost when he vote for Net Zero’s ultimate coal shutdown, and higher fuel prices for rural residents.
