Nashwa back to winning ways in Falmouth at Newmarket
Nashwa recovered from two odds losses this year to win the Falmouth Stakes (G1) at Newmarket under Hollie Doyle. The 4-year-old took a mile back after an unexpected mid-term defeat in the Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes (G3) against Newcastle last time out. Last year’s Prix de Diane (G1) winner was sent off 4-1 after being beaten in her last four starts, including at the Breeders’ Cup.
This time, she made it through the rain to reach the finish line Remarquee And Via Sistina who gets the green light to run after a rainy day.
Nashwa was knocked out 3-1 by Paddy Power (from 8-1) to score consecutive successes in the 1 1/4 mile Nassau Stakes (G1) at Goodwood next month.
John Gosden, who trains with his son Thady, told ITV: “It took her a long time to calm down. “She was a bit interested in Newcastle early so we decided she needed to race more and opted to supplement her last weekend. I didn’t want to wait seven weeks for the Nassau Stakes.”
Regarding future goals, the general trainer added: “She is adaptable in terms of rides. She has the body of a pony and a mile and a half is the highest in her range. She’s got great speed and the one-mile drop suits her. The plan is Nassau but she could join (Queen Elizabeth II’s stake, G1) at the end of the season.”
Doyle scored on her first try at Falmouth, and said: “Things are going well at the moment and let this dirty girl turn her head and show how good she really is as She’s a real flag-bearer for me and someone suspiciously dropping her back a mile.
“I think she’s proven she’s incredibly versatile. Nassau could be back on the card and many more doors opened after she dropped a mile again.”
