Weather

My new podcast is out

This year the weather was pretty typical: a relatively cool and wet June, then a shift to consistently warm/dry days in early July.

Perfect weather is ahead and my blog describes the change from gloomy June to summer sun.

See the latest NWS National Composite Model Forecast for Seattle (see below). After Tuesday, a steady rise to lower 80s, no rain and plenty of sunshine

So why turn to perfection?

Over the past month, a series of upper-level troughs have moved through, bringing periodic showers and cooler temperatures. The upper-level map at about 18,000 ft (500 hPa) for today at 2 p.m. is shown below. Trough to the northwest and a mountain range offshore. Not a warm pattern!

But by Thursday, the depression had moved inland and the ridge was growing offshore. Not too strong (which can cause a heat wave) but just right.

And four days later, the ridge was still there, stretching northwest into Alaska.

So you should have perfect weather to enjoy fireworks, have a barbecue or go on that long-planned hike. A good time for meteorologists to take a vacation.

In my podcast I talk about fireworks…please be careful. This year we have had fewer bushfires than usual…keep it that way.
