Moto Guzzi Stornello 125 Turismo
Moto Guzzi Stornello 125 Turismo
With Phil Aynsley
Although superficially similar to the previous 175 cc Lodola, the Stornello is a new design penned by Giulio Carcano – his previous efforts included a 500 cc V8 (Moto Guzzi V8 | 300km/h in 1957 on a 500cc . 4-stroke engine) – and was intended to be both cheap to produce and attractive to the US and domestic markets.
The single 123 cc engine features a parallel OHV, a wet sump, a four-speed transmission and a cast crankcase in an effort to keep costs down. An open-loop tubular steel frame uses the engine as a load-bearing element.
Later, more sports cars were equipped with angled valve cylinder heads.
The Stornello sold well and in late 1969 it was expanded to 160 cc, with a five-speed transmission added the following year.
Ultimately, more than 58,000 were produced before it was discontinued in 1974.
The bike seen here is a 1966 Turismo model, producing 7 hp at 7200 rpm, weighing 85 kg with a top speed of about 100 km/h.
