As we await revelations about Volkswagen’s production-limited electric Microbus relaunch, the VW ID.4 electric SUV is up in price from a slow start of deliveries here and with its second model year, already ready to materialize mass market potential compared to gasoline models such as Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V.
As hinted a few weeks ago, with details revealed for the first time for foreign versions, the 2022 models for the US Will get Plug and Charge– removal of a step in roadside fast charging — as well as improvements to DC 135 kw fast charging. VW previously said the ID.4 peaked at around 125 kW.
VW also says 2022 will bring automatic handbrake hold. Both that and Plug and Charge will be made available as part of an upcoming over-the-air update.

Now, VW says it also anticipates improving its EPA-rated range for 2022 — compared with current ratings from 240 miles to 260 miles, depending on version.
On the other hand, the ID.4 returns for 2022 with an 82 kWh battery pack for the entire product line. The single-engine rear-wheel drive version makes 201 hp, while the all-wheel drive version makes 295 hp.
Including the required $1,195 destination fee, the 2022 VW ID.4 starts at $41,955 for the ID.4 Pro or $45,635 for the AWD Pro. The Pro version of the ID.4 includes a 10.0-inch touchscreen system with HD navigation radio, seven speakers, and voice control, plus wireless charging and four USB-C ports. They also include a full suite of active safety items, adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.

The Pro S versions, at $46,455 with rear-wheel drive or $50,135 for the Pro S AWD, add sportier trim plus projector headlights, illuminated logos, puddle lights, permanent glass roof panoramic settings, ambient lighting, leatherette upholstery, a larger 12.0-inch infotainment screen, larger 20-inch (versus 19-inch) wheels, memory and performance settings higher adjustability for the front seats. You can also add the $1,500 Gradient Package on the Pro S, upgrading to a black hood with silver accents and 20-inch machined alloy wheels.
As our companion site CarsDirect Reportedly, Volkswagen is converting some orders from 2021 to 2022, but sending affected buyers a Customer Support Bonus Code worth the exact amount price increase compared to 2021– $765. So they get a 2022 model for the same price. The customer will have to present that code at the time of sale.
VW will continue to include three years of 30-minute DC fast charging sessions at Electrify America with all new ID.4s.

Delivery of US-built ID.4 models in Chattanooga expected to start in the fall, with the base 62 kWh model starting at around $36,000 including destination, presumably before the end of the year.
That could cut some of the competition. A base version of 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 will arrive sometime in May for just $40,925. And 2022 Nissan Ariya, which is expected to arrive this spring, will start around $40,000. However, GM just confirmed last week a $30,000 Chevrolet Equinox EV for the arrival of 2023, so the competition is heating up.
Ford recently increased the sticker price on the Mach-E by a significant amount over 2021 models — though with five new models, they also get increase range.
All in all, they could give Tesla some competition. At the end of 2021, Tesla has raised the price of the Model Y to $17,000 compared to the beginning of the year.
