Modenas begins exporting Kawasaki ZX-6R to China

National motorcycle manufacturer Modenas has begun exporting locally assembled Kawasaki ZX-6R sportsbikes to China. During a visit to the company’s facility in Gurun, Kedah, Malaysian media was able to see the ZX-6R assembly line and the process of releasing a container.

China is Modenas’ newest export destination since operations began in 1997, Greece being its first foreign market. Since then Modenas has exported motorcycles to 10 international markets with 91,057 two-wheelers of various capacities and types.

Plans to export the ZX-6R to China begin in 2021, with Modenas overcoming two major hurdles; The first is permission from joint venture partner Kawasaki Heavy Industry (KHI); and second, approved by the China Quality Certification Center, including factory inspection.

Production began in January 2024 and Kastam DiRaja Malaysia (Royal Malaysian Customs) approved exports in February. The first batch of 28 ZX-6Rs arrived at Kawasaki Motors Shanghai in March 2024. 2024, followed by a second batch of 140 units in May.

With this third batch of 112 units, the total export volume of ZX-6R assembled by Modenas to China has reached a total of 280 units. There are currently three production lines at the Modenas plant, including one dedicated to the production of the ZX-6R.
