It is the end or end time in Major League Soccer. The MLS 2021 knockout is finally set and the path to the 2021 MLS Cup title is clear.

Here are the basics: A total of 14 teams made the post-season (seven from East, seven from West). The team with the best record hosts every match of the knockout round, and the 1st seed in each of the games will get a bye to the first round and the home field advantage throughout. It’s a knockout knockout from start to finish.

The madness kicks off on November 20, and the full schedule for the 13 playoff games through the MLS Cup on December 11 is listed below:

In the knockout stage, if there is any tie after the allotted 90 minutes, matches will count towards 30 minutes of extra time. The penalty shootout will determine the winner if the game is still deadlocked at the end of extra time.

The final standings in both the East and the West were established after Decision Day. Here’s how the playoff races ended:

Eastern Conference

The top seven teams did just that (marked with an ‘X’) with New England Revolution taking the No. 1 seed a few weeks ago. DC United and defending champion Columbus Crew SC were one point behind in the knockout game (noted with an ‘E’), as the NY Red Bulls took seventh and final place with a draw in last day.

In the event of teams being tied on points, those with the first tie score are (1) total wins, (2) goal difference and (3) number of goals scored. Here are the top 10 spots on the final standings of the 14th Eastern League:

Western Conference

The top seven qualified teams (noted with an ‘X’). Real Salt Lake won the final day (1-0 on ) winner in stoppage time in KC), while both LA teams were disqualified (noted with an ‘E’) after failing to win their last games. LAFC lost to top seed Colorado 5-2, while LA Galaxy could only draw 3-3 at home to 5th seed Minnesota.

Tiebreakers play for last place in the playoffs in the West. The first place leaders in the MLS are (1) total wins, (2) goal difference and (3) goals scored, and RSL has overtaken LA Galaxy in total wins. (14 vs 13). Here’s how the top nine spots in the 13-team Western Conference finished:

How the MLS knockouts work

A total of 12 knockouts will leave two finalists, one for each, for the MLS Cup on December 11. Here’s how the playoff format works:

• First round: The three matches in each round are number 2 vs 7, number 3 vs number 6 and number 4 vs number 5 respectively. 1st seed goodbye. The seed host is higher.
• Semi-final conference: It was predetermined that the 1st seed would face the winner of the 4th and 5th matchups. The remaining two winners went head to head: 3 / No. 6 vs. 2 / No. 7. Again, higher seed hosts.
• Conference Finals: The last two teams remaining to stand in each game meet at the home ground of the remaining highest seed.
• MLS Cup: The two games champions meet in the MLS Cup, hosted by the regular season’s best-performing team.

The same extra time rules for playoffs – 30 minutes of extra time after 90 minutes of regulation and penalties, if needed – apply in the MLS Cup final.

MLS Cup 2021

The 26th MLS Cup Finals will take place on Saturday, December 11 and will be hosted by the regular season’s best finalist.

Who will win the MLS Cup?

The New England Revolution, which amassed the best record in the MLS during the 2021 season, is the most popular post-season favourite. The Colorado Rapids (#1 in the west) and the Seattle Sounders (#2 in the west) have the next lowest odds.

There are some significant disparities in odds among the major sportsbooks, all of which are likely to readjust their numbers as we get closer to the start of the knockout stages.
