About half an hour before his lunch break on a June morning, Travis Mudry was operating an excavator and digging through permafrost in the Klondike gold field in the Yukon in Canada.
He was scratching at a wall of frozen earth. Suddenly, a large array popped out. With it was the carcass of a woolly woolly mammoth, frozen and preserved with its fur and skin.
Mudry, 31, from Alberta, said: “At first I thought it was a baby buffalo. “And then I went out, and I was checking it, and it had a chest, so I had no words.”
The mammoth was dark and glossy, with short legs and deep, pronounced eye sockets, Mr. Mudry said. It has a thin, wrinkled body and a tail with a tail. He quickly waved to a colleague and called his boss, Brian McCaughan, the co-founder of a family-owned gold mining company called Treadstone Equipment.
Mr. McCaughan, 57, said of the discovery made on June 21. “It sparkled in front of us like it had just died.”
He compared its size to that of a white-tailed deer. Mr. McCaughan said that the excavation of bones, even from mammoths, was common during mining, but the discovery was something beyond compare. “It’s like we’ve been rewarded by Mother Earth when you pull something like this out of the ground,” he said.
Experts estimate that the mammoth was just over a month old when it died in the mud. It was then caught up in time, encased in frozen soil known as permafrost, during an ice age more than 30,000 years ago, said Grant Zazula, a Yukon Government paleontologist.
To be so well-preserved, the mammoth had to be buried in mud very quickly, Mr. Zazula said, calling the situation “nothing magical”.
He said the baby mammoth was about 140 centimeters long from the base of the tail to the base of the body, which is a little over four and a half feet.
Although its body was broken in half, either by excavators or by the effects of natural forces over time, he said it was “complete from head to tail”.
He said it may be the best-preserved specimen found in North America and may even surpass Lyubaa female woolly mammoth found in Siberia in 2017 almost intact but missing its tail.
The woolly mammoth, the ancestor of modern elephants, once crossed the Northern Hemisphere. Surname disappeared about 10,000 years ago because of overhunting and climate change.
Joshua H. Miller, paleontologist and professor at the University of Cincinnati, says mammoths abound in the Yukon’s ancient past.
Today, the territory has an “excellent” fossil record of prehistoric animals, including steppe bison, ancient cats and short-faced bears, Miller said. Mining contributed to the abundance of discoveries. But most are bones, not mummies.
The finding has important implications for research, Mr. Miller said. Experts can better understand the mammoth’s anatomy and environment, and even the conditions that led to its long-term preservation.
There are also deep meanings for Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin The people of the Yukon First Nation had territory where the mammoths died, Mr. Zazula said. He believes this is an opportunity to heal the nation, which has had a century of conflict with gold rush miners.

Currently, Nun Cho Ga is in a freezer in Yukon, a few hours away from the mine site, awaiting further analysis. Mr Zazula said: While studying the mammoth will reveal “incredible details” about its distant past, even what its last meal was, there is no rush.
Together, the First Nation, the Yukon government, scientists and miners are embarking on a journey of cultural and scientific discovery, he said.
“This woolly mammoth is really a symbol of all that together, and how to move forward in a good way,” he said.
