Mild hybrid engine coming soon for Toyota HiLux, Fortuner


Toyota in South Africa confirmed to be involved HiLux ute and Fortuner Both SUVs will receive mild hybrid powertrains in 2024.

As reported by the South African publication XeMagToyota South Africa Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Leon Theron said during an event about the mild hybrid HiLux And Fortuner both are on the cards to launch in that market next year.

No other information has been announced about the HiLux and Fortuner mild hybrids at this event in South Africa.

We’ve reached out to Toyota Australia to confirm when we might see mild hybrid power here.

It is unclear whether mild hybrid electrification will be added to the 2.4-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder or the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder. Only the latter engine was offered in Australia.

It’s also unclear if the output changes with the mild hybrid system.

This is not the first time Toyota has discussed electrification for these models, said Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchising Sean Hanley. recent suggestion HiLux range will expand further this year.

“Hybrid, plug-in hybrid – there are all sorts of variants. We’re looking at H2 (hydrogen) conversion, we’re looking at BEV, we’re looking at everything. This is exactly what we’re talking about – Toyota won’t put all your eggs in one basket.

“What’s important to us in Australia is fit for purpose. And I know I said this was nauseating. Some people get it, and most of the silent majority actually get it. But of course, everyone has different opinions and I respect everyone’s different views, because they’re not all wrong and they’re not all right either.”

Although Toyota is the market leader in hybrid vehicles, it has yet to launch any hybrid off-road or commercial vehicles in Australia.

In contrast, GWM plans to roll out a hybrid this year, while Ford is working on a plug-in hybrid version of it forest ranger.

Toyota previously revealed a Electric HiLux concept in Thailand, and indicates a production version as due in 2026.

It has also confirmed it will produce prototype hydrogen fuel cell versions of the HiLux . in the UK.
