Mike Jones ends the season with a thrilling final win at The Bend
ASBK 2022
The finale of The Bend – Superbike Race Two
Mike Jones lined up on the net with a lot lighter weight on his shoulders after the end of the 2022 Mi-bike Insurance Australia Superbike Championship at race one after finishing sixth in that competition.
The winner of today’s opening match was Wayne Maxwell and Glenn Allerton’s Troy Herfoss while Jack Miller retired early due to technical problems. And at the end of this race, Wayne Maxwell will retire from the ASBK competition…
This time started much better for Jack Miller and this time he led race one from Sissis and then Senna Agius also overcame Sissis to advance to second place. Josh Waters and Marcel Schroetter were both eliminated in round one.
Miller anxiously sprinted while young Senna Agius chased Arthur Sissis in third, Mike Jones fourth, Troy Herfoss fifth and Wayne Maxwell sixth.
Mike Jones went inside Sissis on turn one as they started round two and Herfoss was also pressuring Sissis. Wayne Maxwell then went inside Herfoss a few turns later for fifth place. Glenn Allerton was also present at the party along with Cru Halliday.
Up front, it was Miller, Agius and Mike Jones looking dangerous, the newly crowned champion looking to overtake Agius. After being unable to find his way through, he begins to be attacked by the oncoming Troy Herfoss, who is taking Wayne Maxwell with him on the trip!
Maxwell moved inside Herfoss in round three and their skirmish allowed the lead trio to get some breathing room. In the foreground, Agius shows Miller a wheel to signal his intentions.
Mike Jones under the guidance of Agius was in turn the next to advance to second and the fastest on the track. Maxwell then brought down Agius at the age of six to knock the youngster down to fourth place.
With eight laps remaining, Mike Jones has now overtaken Miller, while Wayne Maxwell has overtaken Jones. What a race! Especially when Agius, Allerton, Herfoss, Sissis and Halliday are still in the game.
Maxwell almost took Jones’ second as Jones managed to overtake Miller, but didn’t want to risk knocking out the MotoGP star and being surrounded by crowds on the same day he won the championship!
Jones eventually made the first turn with six laps to run, which was a big move and put Miller on hold, which allowed Maxwell to slip through on the next turn. Maxwell bounced back to overtake Jones for the lead as Glenn Allerton pushed Miller down to fourth. It’s like Donkey Kong!
Herfoss then pushed Miller to fifth and Agius then added insults to push Miller back to sixth!
Four laps to run and it’s Maxwell, Jones, Allerton, Herfoss, Agius, Miller, Sissis and Halliday with just two seconds including those eight riders. Herfoss took third place from Allerton with 3.5 laps left.
Mike Jones took the lead with three runners, Herfoss was right in third, Allerton fourth, Agius fifth and those five now have a score above sixth-placed Miller.
Herfoss then overtook Maxwell for second place, which sent Boost Mobile Ducati racer Ducati into the clutches of determined Glenn Allerton.
Mike Jones then dropped at 1m50,995 to keep away his pursuers, the closest being Troy Herfoss, who is desperate to end the season with a double win. Jack Miller and Arthur Sissis finished sixth and seventh and set up their fastest laps so far this late.
Even so, Jones took the lead and is now asserting his dominance. He dropped that 1m50,995 up with 1m51,192 and won the final group with eight tenths more than Herfoss. But Herfoss then went down, and Allerton went down behind him because I think he was confused by Herf’s death!
Wayne Maxwell and Senna Agius were vying for second place and the youngster took the lead on the final lap!
Mike Jones did just that, ending a brilliant season with a resounding win, his sixth win of the season.
Young Senna Agius took an absolutely stunning second place ahead of Wayne Maxwell. Agius also set the second fastest lap with 1m51.133.
Jack Miller crossed the limit in fourth place but was crowned the people’s champion. His presence and generous spirit to bring his Thriller Motorsports Team together and race us here again in ASBK was truly a treat and everyone in the paddock Can’t thank him enough.
Arthur Sissis is fourth, Halliday fifth while Westy is 12 seconds behind in seventh ahead of Daniel Falzon and Broc Pearson while Joel Kelso makes the top 10 ahead of Jed Metcher, Bryan Staring and Billy McConnell while Glenn Allerton has tried. his group stage progress fell behind Herfoss to take a few points for 14th place.
