According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 55 people are missing after a crowded boat of migrants sank off the coast of Tunisia.

The IOM said 24 people were rescued from the boat that left the Zawara beach in Libya and sank off the coast of Sfax.

A Tunisian security official told Reuters news agency that the coast guard had recovered a body.

In recent months, dozens of people have drowned off the coast of Tunisia.

Hundreds of thousands of people have crossed the perilous Mediterranean in recent years.

Figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) show that more than 123,000 migrants have arrived in Italy in 2021, compared with more than 95,000 in 2020.
