Michigan HIE Partners for Post-Acute Care Interoperability

The Michigan Health Information Network, a statewide health information exchange nonprofit, will integrate PointClickCare’s cloud-based software to facilitate seamless, automated flow of patient data .

WHY IT IMPORTANT
MiHIN has announced that its partnership with the largest post-acute electronic medical records provider in the country will now allow 250 new post-acute providers and case managers to exchange data real time via HIE.

Despite the widespread adoption of certified health information systems, many of Michigan’s long-term care facilities and emergency medical providers have not been able to fully utilize the state’s network.

MiHIN aims to foster and enhance healthcare collaboration, care coordination, and interoperability by providing access to real-time insights at any stage in the journey. of the patient.

Dr Tim Pletcher, chief executive officer of MiHIN, said in the announcement.

The partnership “will equip Michigan hospitals to join the unprecedented landscape of point-of-care emergency department patients,” added Dr. Ben Zaniello, chief medical officer at PointClickCare.

PointClickCare’s emergency department optimization feature will also be made available to hospitals across the state for clinicians to care for vulnerable patient populations, such as expectant mothers, experiencing health inequalities, those transferred from acute post-acute care, and those affected by opioids.

That platform allows emergency departments to access prior patient visits, history, and inter-organizational patient care plans in real time to support their high-risk patients.

TREND TO BIGGER WOMAN
HIEs have an important role to play in public health reporting, especially when regional laws vary.

California’s 2022 Single Data Sharing Agreement, as required by law, refers to an information exchange ecosystem that is often fragmented and submerged in the state.

“Data exchange is incredibly local, and I think we all know that,” Timi Leslie, founder of BluePath Health and leader at Connecting for Better Health, explained in a recent HIMSSCast podcast. about California’s requirement for real-time payment and treatment exchanges. and share healthcare performance information by 2024.

Leslie said the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant gaps in the state’s healthcare data interoperability, Leslie said, noting that there are some blueprints from other states that need follow.

Brian Dixon, a research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute: “HIEs in the region understand their health system context well and can navigate the key stakeholders that appeal to healthcare organizations. The public health sector is in dialogue with health system leadership and can develop interfaces that connect health system actors,” said Brian Dixon, a research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute. IT news about healthcare in 2019.

The long-term value, especially when HIE coordinates with provider-led engagement efforts, is how they strengthen healthcare collaboration. Experts have long pointed to the fact that HIEs can inform providers of clinical events, making them a useful utility.

“The fact that EHRs are more common and the fact that they are better interoperable… are all assets in the equation that make the country more interoperable,” said John Kansky, principal President and CEO of the Indiana Health Information Exchange, said when IT news about healthcare reported on the long-term value of HIE, even as carrier-run networks, such as CommonWell Health Alliance, have reached maturity.

“But what’s often forgotten is if you’re looking for people who have come a long way and/or have the data available – and in some cases, have the data in a standardized, managed, repositories that are readily available. ready to trade – it’s HIE,” said Kansky.

ON PROFILE
“We hope this partnership will support the delivery, safety and coordination of optimized care for patients, and will significantly improve outcomes and reduce reductions,” said MiHIN’s Pletcher. costs associated with particularly vulnerable populations.
