Mercedes Vision EQXX concept introduced as the brand’s most efficient EV, scheduled to launch on January 3
The efficiency-focused Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX concept will be revealed on 3 January 2022, Mercedes R&D Director Markus Schäfer announced in a press release. LinkedIn Posts last week.
Announced in July, the Vision EQXX targets a range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) in the real world on a single charge. That’s about 100 miles more than the 520-mile Lucid Air Dream Edition, though the Vision EQXX is expected to be a slightly smaller sedan with a coupe-like silhouette.
The goal of range will be achieved through performance rather than just a large battery pack. At normal highway speeds, the Vision EQXX will consume single-digit kwh energy for every 62 miles driven, says Schäfer.
The Vision EQXX is an “interdisciplinary” effort involving various Mercedes divisions, including the automaker’s Formula One powertrain division, Schäfer said.

Mercedes has begun to emphasize efficiency and range to a greater extent with EQS sedan, which boasts a drag coefficient of 0.20. However, with a maximum EPA range rating of 350 miles, the EQS still trails both the Air and Tesla Model S by a significant distance.
EQS uses battery cells from China’s CATL, but Mercedes plan to spend $1.1 billion on a global network of battery manufacturing facilities. A more hands-on approach to battery manufacturing could yield additional improvements in efficiency.
Schäfer has said that the Vision EQXX will feature cells with 20% greater energy density than the EQS cells. That, along with what will likely be a smaller footprint than the EQS, could help the concept achieve Mercedes’ range goals. Let’s hope these performance improvements make it a production vehicle as well.
