Mercedes Vision EQXX concept completes a 626-mile trip on a single charge

The Concept Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX completed the 626-mile trip on a single charge, the automaker announced Wednesday in a press release.

The car averaged 7.1 kwh over 62 miles during the trip from Sindelfingen, Germany, to Cassis, France, on the Côte d’Azur, according to Mercedes. At the end of the trip, the battery is said to still have 15% charge, which equates to a range of about 25 miles.

That makes the actual results slightly better than the 621-mile range estimate Mercedes cited when the Vision EQXX was announced at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show. That’s with a battery pack under 100 kWh.

The driving, independently supervised by TÜV Süd, took the Vision EQXX across the Swiss Alps and throughout Northern Italy, creating ample opportunities for energy recovery through regenerative braking during downhill . The trip also included some sections of the German Autobahn, but cruising speeds were kept to a relatively healthy 87 mph (average speed across the route was 54 mph).

EQXX emphasizing efficiency in every element. That starts with lightness. The 3,850-pound weight limit of the Tesla Model 3 lightweight concept — while offering more battery and range.

The battery pack itself is half the size and 30% lighter than the battery pack used in Mercedes-Benz EQS luxury sedan, with a 20% increase in cellular energy density. Mercedes also works without liquid cooling system, at least for batteries, since pumping liquid around uses more power. An inverter engineered with Formula One experience also delivers a claimed 95% battery-to-tire efficiency.

Active aerodynamics give the Vision EQXX an unusual drag coefficient of 0.17, while the solar roof adds 16-mile-per-day driving range.

The Vision EQXX is not a production car, so it wouldn’t be fair to combine it with top production cars like Lucid Air or Tesla Model 3. It’s not necessarily designed for that and all the considerations it entails, from safety and regulatory issues to durability, but most elements from it are expected to emerge. present in compact and mid-size electric vehicles based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) starting in 2024.
