Mazda CX-9 future unknown, new CX-90 launched

Mazda Australia Will continue to sell CX-9 Full-size SUV as long as it continues to be produced, but the longer-term future of the name remains unclear.

Mazda Australia said today CX-9 range will be sold together with Luxury new CX-90thereby giving the company a trio of three-row SUVs – the other being the smaller CX-8.

But while it says the CX-9 will arrive throughout 2023, it’s not drawn on how long the front- or all-wheel drive crossover will last.

“As long as the Mazda group produces the CX-9, we will have the CX-9,” said Mazda Australia chief executive Vinesh Bindhi today.

“We expect that by 2023 we will have both models on sale side-by-side, and then in the future, whether that model is in that portfolio will depend on whether that model is included in that portfolio. whether they will continue to be produced or not.”

Mazda in the US has confirmed the CX-90 will replace the CX-9 in that market.

“Decisions on CX-8 and CX-9 have not been made yet,” Mr. Bindhi added. “Our current focus is on the launch of the CX-60 and CX-90, and it is clear that Mazda Corporation has considered the CX-70 and CX-80… So no firm decisions have been made yet. “

The CX-8 seems to have a few more years in it. It followed the related two-row CX-5 last year to receive an upgrade, which will come here in March 2023.

Since the CX-9 was developed for the US market, it doesn’t appear that the crossover will receive a third generation when Mazda pivots to the CX-90.

While it is sold in other markets such as New Zealand, the CX-9’s largest market is the US with the smaller Australian market in second place.

Last year, Mazda sold 34,580 CX-9s in the US and 6,460 in Australia.

The CX-9 is not offered in Europe, Japan or China, but is sold in North America, the Middle East and, of course, Australia and New Zealand.

Mazda CEO noted CX-3 and CX-30 were sold side by side, and that CX-5 will continue with the same size CX-60.

Globally, the company is busy launching a line of more premium SUVs on the rear-facing four-wheel drive Large Platform: the two-row CX-60 and the three-row CX-80 developed for Europe. and two wider ones – the three-row CX-70 and the three-row CX-90 developed with North America in mind.

Given Australia’s position as one of Mazda’s strongest markets globally, we’re confirmed to be getting both the CX-60 and CX-90, with the undisclosed CX-70 and CX-80 still in the works. consider.

It’s a similar story with the current CX-8 and CX-9. The former is narrower and features naturally aspirated petrol and turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engines and is offered in markets such as Japan and China, while the latter runs solely on turbocharged gasoline. and aimed at North America.
