Mazda bury this sweet sports car design in a dry business update
Mazda recently issued a press release discussing plans for electrification in the next few years. It gives some more specifics to its plans, but is generally pretty dry, with one odd exception. Among the accompanying photos were two drawings of what was simply called a Vision Research Model, and it was an incredibly beautiful sport. car design which we haven’t seen from Mazda before.
Strangely, there’s not even the slightest bit of information about the design. Nothing about a more specific name, what might power it, or whether it’s a preview of anything in the future. It sure is beautiful, though.
The design looks like a mix of ND Miata and FD RX-7. The overall dimensions are very similar to the Miata, as are the front grille and some sharper lines. But the coupe shape, the smooth, organic body panels and especially the pop-up or fake pop-up headlights are all RX-7’s.
With no other information, we have to speculate as to what could power it, and with Mazda being slow to adopt a full EV, that leaves options pretty wide open. Hypothetically, it could be powered by a variant of the Miata four-cylinder engine or one of the more recent turbos. It can use the electric platform that extends the range of rotation that Mazda’s release in Europe has noted Still slated for 2023 in the MX-30. Or maybe it could be a full tram.
All we know is it’s beautiful, and we want it. Tell us more, Mazda, and let’s build it.
