Cooperation agreements were signed between MARA Group, CRRC Group and China Electrical Equipment Group (CEEG) to explore business projects in the fields of renewable energy, vehicle maintenance and repair electric buses as well as batteries and solar energy storage, Bernama reported.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the initiative by the Majlia Amanah Rakyat (MARA) group of companies is the first step to help the government change public transport from diesel to electric vehicles .

The Deputy Prime Minister witnessed the cooperation signing ceremony, which included a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and Letter of Intent (LoI) between SKS Coach Builders and CRRC Corporation; MARALiner and SKS Coach Builders; and MARA Group and China Electrical Equipment Corporation.

According to the deputy prime minister, there are currently 60,000 diesel buses in Malaysia and these need to be changed to electric buses in stages over the next 10 years as stipulated in the previous Cabinet meeting, the report said. .

“We feel that in the long term, this reduces carbon emissions and is cheaper than using diesel. However, I will discuss in detail with the transport minister the stipulated time period for converting 60,000 diesel buses to electric vehicles,” Ahmad Zahid said.

MARA Group, through MARALiner intends to become a leader in the supply of EV buses, including direct sales and rental to public and government transport, and an estimated fleet of 800 buses worth about RM960 million, Bernama reported.
