Lizzo’s proud mother honors her with the People’s Champion award
At the People’s Choice Awards 2022, Lizzo left with the honor: “People’s Champion Award!” In addition, the “Rumors” singer received an award from none other than her mother, Shari Johnson-Jefferson.

While introducing her daughter to the stage, Shari proudly noted that Lizzo “showed all of us that we don’t have to conform to anyone’s standards to be happy.”
When greeted and honored, Lizzo went on to give a brief personal thank you before sharing the spotlight with other change makers.
“Becoming an icon isn’t about how long you’ve had your background. Being an icon is what you do with that platform. And since the beginning of my career, I’ve used my platform to amplify marginalized voices. So tonight I am sharing this honor. Let’s make some noise for everyone, friends!
She then went on to welcome 17 activists onto the stage, including Shirley Raines, Amariyanna Copeny (aka Little Miss Flint), and Tamika Palmer—Breonna Taylor’s mother.
One by one, Lizzo goes over and briefly describes all of the activists’ goals, showing that she really wants to honor real-life champions for the people. Finally, she ended by exclaiming, “Power will always belong to the people!”

At this point, we should add that reports began to emerge last month that Lizzo would receive this honor. Based on DiversityCassandra Tryon—a senior at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming—explained the decision by praising Lizzo’s support.
“She leads with kindness, advocates inclusion, and advocates for increased diversity and equity in the industry and beyond. Her commitment to breaking down barriers and empowering others to use their own voices to create change makes her a true ‘Champion of the People’.”
Lizzo Just Recognized as TikTok’s Top Hit Maker of 2022
Notably, Lizzo received the People’s Champion Award on the same day that TikTok gave her an honor of her own.
Like Shade room previously reported, the social media platform named Lizzo the #1 “Hit Maker” of the year. Other stars who have received thanks in this category include Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and Selena Gomez, while artists such as Ice Spice, GloRilla and Muni Long are included in the “Emerging Artists” section.
