Lincoln Zephyr for China to bring the brand back to the sedan game

Lincoln give up the sedan segment in the United States, but its China division isn’t ready to pivot to a range just for high-end models. It introduced a sedan named Zephyr developed only for China and will be produced domestically.

If the name sounds familiar, you already know the history of America luxury car or you have updated the news recently. Lincoln’s original Zephyr was an elegant model, powered by a V12 engine, available in a variety of body styles and sold between 1936 and 1942. More recently, the nameplate has appeared on the market. a thinly veiled concept was introduced in Shanghai as a preview of the limited production model.

Unsurprisingly, the sedan has changed little in the transition from design research to a mass production vehicle. It has larger and more realistic headlights and a redesigned front end, and it has a pair of regular door mirrors (the concept is equipped with a camera). At the rear, the bumper has a new look and the lighting elements have changed, although the light bar is still oddly reminiscent. Audi A7. What hasn’t been refined are the Zephyr’s proportions: It’s sleek, convertible, and is one of Lincoln’s finest modern sedans.

“Every detail inside and out is crafted with a deep understanding of our young Chinese customers,” said Mao Jingbo, president of Lincoln’s China division. This is an interesting statement; Lincoln is targeting a customer, on our side of the Pacific, not usually found inside one of its showrooms or seen behind the wheel of a sedan. To that end, the interior is packed with tech including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 27-inch touchscreen that takes up the entire dashboard.

We know that Zephyr offers Lincoln’s largest puddle light (called the Welcome Carpet), four Relax Modes, several “digital scents,” and a 128-color ambient lighting system. What we don’t know much about is what’s under the hood: The only specs announced by the company outline a 2.0-liter engine, presumably a four-cylinder, connected to an automatic transmission. eight levels.

Lincoln will begin selling the Zephyr in the Chinese market in the first quarter of 2022. The sedan will also be manufactured in China, a first for the company to boast. And there’s nothing to suggest it will be sold outside of the domestic market – let alone in the United States.
