Undercover investigations have played an important role in raising public awareness of animal cruelty. By providing evidence that should have remained hidden, our investigations have sparked public outrage and calls for reform.
A letter from Marco, Undercover Investigator of Animal Equality:
I am used to risk and uncertainty; sudden change of plans; jeopardize my health and safety: That’s the nature of my job.
As you can imagine, everything I do in “normal” situations isn’t quite a walk in the park… In these last months, it has become more difficult and dangerous to carry out my investigations.
But not for a second did I think of stopping or staying silent with the stories I watched.
Fortunately for me, I am surrounded by a group of true professionals, and thanks to the high organization and specialization of each of us, we can still wrap up important projects in the bleakest months of 2020.
The investigation we conducted in May in China was one example among many, and we will soon be able to announce other important investigations.
What motivates us? to do what we do is the desire to redeem all the animals we meet along the way—animals the meat industry has no mercy on.
For this reason, we tell the truth without filter (even sometimes in a very blunt way) because everyone has a right to know the truth…even if it often hurts.
I choose to be part of Animal Equality because it puts animals raised for consumption—species that are often overlooked and forgotten by anyone—at the heart of its mission because for the industry meat, they are nothing more than “just food” or “machine money.”
Domestic animals die in greatest numbers at the hands of humans: A real massacre takes place in silence every second. Even so, these creatures are least protected by law.
Beyond this silence, animals raised and killed for food are a anguish that no one sees because it happens behind closed doors of farms and slaughterhouses.
With my work, I open those doors and project the images and sounds of that secret world for everyone to know the truth.
Unfortunately, simply gathering evidence of animal cruelty and abuse isn’t enough (although in my ideal world, that would be enough to change their lives).
This is where the rest of the Animal Equality group comes into play.
Thanks to our media teamThe images we collect from farms and slaughterhouses are shared around the world to encourage people to make more compassionate choices.
Through our Business outreach departmentLarge food companies are being persuaded to adopt better animal welfare policies and higher standards.
Finally, through the constant legal and political pressurewe force governments to change animal welfare laws and make sure that offenders go unpunished.
But there is still one fundamental element missing that allows these strategies to work…
meat industry strong, well organized and above all, have a huge amount of capital to convince millions of consumers (e.g. through false advertising) that their products are ethical and humane.
Opposite, we are just a small group of determined people, united by a common dream to change the world and build a fairer society for all, including animals.
I will be honest with you…
We will never have the same economic resources as those of great industry, and we will never be able to fight them equally.
But we have something more: Compassion!
I know that seeing animals suffering, crying and screaming in pain is heartbreaking and something no one wants to see. I know those images make you so angry and you want to stop all that evil with a snap of your fingers…
Unfortunately, that is not possible.
If we want to achieve concrete and lasting results for animals, we must thoroughly research our opponents and persevere in what we do, never getting discouraged.
If you are reading this, it is because in your heart you want to do something for all the animals that are exploited and abused by the food industry, killed in the wet market, and are being suffering on farms and slaughterhouses across the United States.
At this point, you have two paths ahead.
You can ignore everything you have read so far in the hope that sooner or later someone else will do something for the most vulnerable of the defenseless…
…or you could be part of a small group of people who want to change the world and stand with us.
Whatever decision you choose, I thank you for reading this letter because even in this uncertain time, you have given ten minutes of your time to the plight of domestic animals. I really appreciate this!
