The last chance to qualify for the National Equestrian Championship (NHC) 2023 again occurred on the eve of the tournament, Thursday, March 9, 2023, during the Last Chance qualifiers. Same/First Chance at Horseshoe Las Vegas. Last year’s Last Chance/First Chance competition brought a record 21 seats to the NHC weekend.
For horse riders looking for a last chance to compete for the biggest cash prizes in Thoroughbred horse racing and the Eclipse Prize, the Last Chance/First Chance qualifier is their chance. For those who already qualify, it’s a way to earn a second NHC 2023 entry. And for those who already have a maximum of two NHC slots this year, Last Chance/First Chance offers the luxury of winning the first spots for NHC 2024.
The top five places at the Last Chance/First Chance Competition are guaranteed a spot to qualify for #NHC2023 provided they are a current NHC Tour 2022 member. An additional NHC qualifying point will be awarded for each of the first 20 entries in the first 140 entries. The top three leaders will share a total cash prize equivalent to 30% of the entry fee (15% for 1st place, 10% for 2nd place, 5% for 3rd place) with the rest of the participation fee being transferred to the NHC award group.
A match against the NHC, the Last Chance/First Chance Competition included races from around the country. Tournament format requires participants to make a total of 11 WIN/READ bets (four required races and seven player selections). The $500 entrance fee must be paid in full prior to entering the tournament. Players can register in person at the Paris Race and Sports Book or online at NTRA.com/NHC2023 (Registration closes Wednesday, March 8 at 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time). Participants can purchase up to four entries in the Last Chance/First Chance Contest.
