Originally used as a term to raise awareness of systemic inequality in society, sobriety is now a deeply divisive term. The media’s continued perpetuation of a culture of awakening has made the term a buzzword. For some, being awakened is part of the antidote to acknowledging tools of oppression. For others, it is a dangerous authoritarian ideology, a kind of inverted McCarthyism that erodes free society and encourages self-imposed victimization. Is the ‘war on waking’ a legitimate phenomenon or a reactionary distraction from the real problems being solved ‘awakened’?
