Katie Taylor talks Serrano rematch and reveals ‘most special moment’ of her career
Just over three months after the fight that permanently changed women’s boxing, Katie Taylor chatted about a potential rematch with Amanda Serrano.
Taylor and Serrano became the first women to head Madison Square Garden in the iconic arena’s history, and it’s safe to say they didn’t disappoint. In the ten-round bout, it was the Irish woman who came out on top, successfully defending her undisputed lightweight title in a matchup against candidate of the year..
Speaking on Matchroom’s ‘Flash Knockdown’ podcastTaylor recalls what was a magical night for the 2012 Olympic champion.
“It was absolutely incredible, to be honest, I never thought anything would surpass my Olympics or my Olympic medal, but I think that night at Madison Square Garden definitely surpassed it. through it.”
“Definitely the most special moment of my career so far. I think there were 6,000 Irish fans who came to the game and the atmosphere between the Irish fans and the Puerto Rican fans was amazing.”
“Sometimes we couldn’t hear the bells in battle because it was so loud in the arena. This is arguably the biggest battle in women’s history, and we’ve definitely surpassed everyone’s expectations and it’s a great moment for the sport. Just a war that makes history.”
As expected, rollback requests occurred immediately from the moment the last bell rang. Not because of any controversial decisions, but so fans can witness two of the best things to do again.
Although negotiations for a rematch were underway, they seem to have disbanded fairly soon after starting. Jake Paul, cheerleader for seventh-weight world champion Serrano, believes Taylor should be relegated to Puerto Rico in featherweightalthough the champion has never fought under 130lbs, the featherweight superclass limit.
Taylor immediately rejected the idea, making her claim for a rematch known.
“At the end of the day, I don’t think I’ve ever heard that in boxing the champion wins and then they have a rematch in a lower weight class. It really makes no sense to be honest and I don’t know if he’s playing the game or his innocence. “
“But obviously the rematch will be at 135lbs, I’m the champion and if she wants a rematch it will be the weight division.”
However, fans’ wishes look like they’ll have to wait as Serrano is scheduled to face old world title challenger Brenda Carabajal in the under-match. Paul’s fight with Hasim Rahman Jr. before it gets cancelled. It remains unclear whether Serrano will continue to play the Argentine on another day or find other avenues.
Whatever Serrano decides to do, it looks like Taylor is already planning her next move, looking to return for the winter, with a crossover fight with UFC stars Holly Holm or Cris Cyborg, two of rumored names.
“I plan to go out at the end of the year, probably in November/December. And it would be nice to come back and go back to the ring and announce my fight. “
“I was in the gym. I think I only had two or three days off after the Serrano game and I was back in the gym. I’m just itching to get into this stage. “
