Katie Taylor prevailed again. Amanda Serrano rematch next?
Katie Taylor is still perfect.
The undisputed lightweight champion dominated the previously undefeated Karen Elizabeth Carabajal on her way to a one-way decision on Saturday night at the OVO Arena in London.
Taylor (22-0.6 KO) is currently 16-0 in world title fights.
Carabajal (19-1, 2 KOs) enters the fray with a flashy record but has never fought outside of her native Argentina, meaning she has never shared a ring with anyone like her. Taylor.
The loser is the game, often fueling the action and throwing her share of the punches until she fades in the ensuing rounds.
However, Carabajal could not succumb to Taylor’s ability and hand speed. That allows the champion to pick a separate challenger – mostly with her forehand – and take a few punches herself.
So the scores are not surprising: 100-91, 99-91 and 98-92, all in Taylor’s favor.
“22 matches, 22 wins. Still undefeated. That’s what it’s all about,” Taylor said.
Taylor’s next challenge could be tougher: Her cardmakers are pursuing a rematch with Amanda Serrano, who fell short of Taylor’s decision to split for the belt in April.
Whoever Taylor fights, she wants it at Croke Park in her hometown. She has never fought in Ireland in her professional career.
“We hope it [Serrano],” said promoter Eddie Hearn after the fight. “But it doesn’t matter who it is. It will be a big fight. and it has to be next, and it has to be Ireland.
“We’ve been waiting a long time.”
