Kate McKinnon returns to ‘SNL’ as Doctor Fauci with holiday pandemic message

“I’m back!” McKinnon’s Fauci said during McKinnon’s first appearance of the season. “Do people still think I’m sexy or are we done with it?”

McKinnon’s Fauci notes that when people see him on TV, they say, “Oh, this can’t be good,” while their children comment, “Wow, that Elf is old.”

“SNL”‘s Fauci goes on to talk about the new coronavirus variant and how, if you’ve been vaccinated, you’ll be well protected. However, with cases on the rise people have some questions.

“Is it safe to travel? Can I use this to get stuff? I want to never work again,” McKinnon’s Fauci said of some of the questions he’s heard.

To help answer these questions, “SNL’s” Fauci offered several scenarios involving CDC staff members to help audiences better understand what was happening.

First there are two CDC employees, played by Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner, playing the role of how to go to a restaurant now.

“Hi, I’d like to have Christmas dinner at your restaurant,” Day’s character says.

“Sure, I just need to see your vaccination card,” Gardner’s character responds.

Day’s character said he couldn’t find it.

“You mean, did you lose that little one-inch piece of cardboard they gave you?” Gardner’s character said, before telling him that since he lost his card, he has been expelled from society.

McKinnon’s Fauci commented that you can only take another card – he thought.

Some other scenarios include people scared of traveling during the pandemic, people visiting Santa, and including public figures like Andrew and Chris Cuomo, who are played by Pete Davidson and Andrew Dismukes played, and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and Representative Lauren Boebert, who are played by Cecily Strong and Chloe Fineman, wield giant guns.

And those aren’t the only public figures to show up. Aidy Bryant’s Sen. Ted Cruz also appeared.

“That’s right, it’s me, the bearded freak, Ted Cruz,” said Bryant’s Cruz. “If you’re sick of seeing me, just think I’m me, how sad I am.”

McKinnon’s Fauci then asked how he was handling the pandemic.

“Oh, the textbooks suck,” said Bryant’s Cruz.

McKinnon’s Fauci then told the audience that despite our differences, there are some things we can agree on, such as spending time with family.

“Or run it alone back to Cancun,” interrupted Bryant’s Cruz.

The cast then got together to say the show’s signature line: “Live… from New York! It’s Saturday night!”
