Just make a movie ‘Andor’, cowards!

it gets a It’s been a long time since anyone went to the cinema Star Wars movie. Three years, in fact. that is Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalkerat the end of 2019. That was before COVID-19 closed theaters, before Disney CEO Bob Iger slow down speed of the Lucasfilm cinematic universe. Many things have changed.

The biggest change, of course, is that fans are starting to watch more of their Star Wars content on Disney+. During the early lockdown due to the pandemic, Palestinians has become a balm for many people. also Boba Fett’s Book And Obi-Wan Kenobi, with perhaps a little less impact on culture change. So it’s no surprise that out of three — yes, three — Star Wars stars Lucasfilm. announced Friday at the Star Wars Celebration in Europe, one of which will be directed by Dave Filoni and will “conclude the interconnected stories told in Palestinians, Boba Fett’s Book, Ahsokaand other Disney+ series.

What’s surprising is that the list doesn’t explicitly include Andor. Not because that story would fit with other stories, but because Andor is the best thing Lucasfilm has done in yearand I’d rather see the two-hour story of Cassian’s revolution against the Empire than the two hours of any other show combined. Which brings me to my point: Create a Andor movie, you coward!

Of course, there is a counter-argument to this. I can hear it already: There was a Andor movie, Rogue One. Yes, the Disney+ series is a spin-off of a movie, but so too Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, and others. While it is true that not much material has been mined in the 5-year narrative time frame between Andor And Rogue One—and there was a second season of Andor in the works — fans spent a much time after the growth of the New Republic. And, I don’t know, maybe there’s something else these movies could exploit. (The alliance of Cassian and Luther Rael is already a movie.)

More than that, AndorStar Wars energy might be what’s needed right now. One of the reasons the show resonates so deeply is that it feels tangible, human. There are no Jedi (as audiences know), no lengthy monologues about the Force. Instead, there were real, non-voting people who struggled with autocracy—the upheavals in prison colonies and street uprisings. Star Wars has always been about escapism, but it has a moral core, one thing Andor exploited more effectively than any other part of the franchise. A movie based on the show’s characters might lack lightsaber and pew-pew action, but it might have something more to it: a soul.

In addition to Filoni’s new film, Lucasfilm announced a new Star Wars from Logan director James Mangold on “Dawn of the Jedi,” and a word Miss Marvel manager Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that would “introduce Daisy Ridley back as Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.” That’s… a lot of Jedi, a lot of woo-woo. Both of these films, especially Obaid-Chinoy’s, are promising. But much more can be done to fulfill the promise of Star Wars. EQUAL New Disney CEO is back Iger face to face against Florida governor Ron DeSantis over what Iger sees as retaliation for the company’s opposition to the so-called Don’t Say Gay bill, perhaps a movie about a different kind of rebellion is just what that the studio needs.
