Junkyard Gem: 1976 Volvo 244 DL

Volvo has been selling quite well. PV444/544, Amazon And 140 in the United States, but it has Volvo 200 series really brought Göteborg iron into the great American age. Presented here as a 1975 modelThe 200 remained in production for nearly two decades and remains the most recognizable Swedish car ever made. This is an early production 244, found in a car graveyard in the Denver area not long ago

The 200 Series can be considered an update to the 140 Series of the late 1960s, as it was essentially the same car from the A-pillar back. The main difference between the two cars was the MacPherson strut front suspension in the 200 Series.

Volvo has been through some naming systems for the 200 Series cars sold in the United States for decades, with the first digit being the easiest to decipher: a three-digit number followed by a two-digit trim level designation. The first digit in the number represents the series, the second digit represents the engine’s cylinder count, and the third digit represents the number of doors. There are six cylinders 262 seconds, 264 seconds And 265 seconds sold in the United States from 1976 to 1981, was powered by the same PRV V6 engine as the DeLorean DMC-12, so it is incorrect to call all 200 series Volvos 240s.

This car was the best-selling member of the 200 family, with a four-cylinder engine and four doors. It was a fuel-injected 2.1-liter SOHC inline-four that made 98 horsepower and 110 pound-feet of torque; the 1975 240 was powered by the 140’s 2.0-liter pushrod engine.

There were two transmissions available on the 1976 240: a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic. This car had an automatic transmission.

Even though this was a base DL model, the first owner of this car paid an extra $456 for air conditioning (about $2,580 in 2024 dollars), on top of a $500 premium for the automatic transmission ($2,829 after inflation). That brought the cost of the car to $7,551, or $42,717 in today’s dollars. You can buy a new luxury car 1976 Buick Electra Limited four-door hardtop for just $6,852, but smart Volvo buyers know that paying extra for safety and authentic Scandinavian build quality is worth it.

European market headlights are rigorously designed Jew on the roads of America in the early Times of unrestfederal safety regulations, so Volvo had to install these ugly closed beams on their cars here. A few years later, the Volvo 200 Series for the US market switched to The four sided rectangular closed beam looks a little nicerfinally got it modern composite headlights for 1986 model year.

The owner or owners of this car have taken very good care of it over the nearly half century of use. The interior looks very nice for its age.

The paint is faded but there is no rust anywhere.

I still find Lots of 244s and 245s in Colorado and California junkyardsincludes some popular machines with over 300,000 miles on their odometers (And one with better 600,000 mile). If you are looking for a Volvo 200 Series project car and you don’t necessarily a two-door carHead west and you will have no trouble finding a dog that is sure to need a forever home.

This car didn’t break any mileage records during its lifetime, unless the speedometer cable snapped decades ago and it actually clocked a few million miles.

This is the first Volvo I’ve seen with “spoked” wheel rims.

No catalytic converter, so it runs well on Petrol supplement vitamin Pb.
