Josh Waters Wins Hidden Valley Opener
ASBK 2023
Round Four – Hidden Valley, Darwin
Super motorcycle race one
Josh Waters took turns leading Glenn Allerton as Troy Herfoss and Mike Jones gave chase as race one got underway in Darwin shortly after noon on Saturday. Next is Bryan Staring before Arthur Sissis, Cru Halliday and Broc Pearson. That order was unchanged throughout the opening laps, but the top four quickly began to break out, running a second faster than fifth place Staring.
The top quartet separated a bit until the race was about five laps away when Josh Waters started overtaking Allerton. The BMW man was then relegated to fourth when both Troy Herfoss and Mike Jones snuck past, but that trio tripping over each other allowed Waters to get ahead.
Cru Halliday had the better record of Staring in fifth place in lap seven but at the time he was six seconds behind race leader and four seconds behind fourth-placed Allerton.
When the race passed halfway, Waters led Herfoss by two seconds, the Penrite Honda man still with Mike Jones and Glenn Allerton at his side. Those top four remained to the finish line for 65 years, while the rest of the field hadn’t made it past a single lap in 65 years.
Josh Waters started to get through the congested traffic on lap 13 but made it through without too much time. The lap time begins to slow down at this stage of the proceedings, the lead group is no longer aged 65.
Allerton overtook Jones in the fifth round for third as the competition for second began to really heat up. Even so, with Allerton putting himself between Herfoss and Jones, it did allow Penrite Honda’s man to get a bit of a breather.
Further down, Cru Halliday lost ground to Bryan Staring, Anthony West and Arthur Sissis.
Waters led by nearly two seconds as they started the final round but the championship lead took the lead in the final round to secure a win.
Behind Waters although the pace has heated up again as Herfoss and Allerton go back to the 65s to deny Mike Jones a finish on the podium.
Bryan Staring was fifth, more than ten seconds behind the podium finisher but a couple of bike miles ahead of sixth-placed Anthony West.
Arthur Sissis is struggling with a wrist injury but took seventh place ahead of Cru Halliday. YRT #65 crashes on lap 12 costing him about eight seconds and a few positions.
Waters extended the championship lead over Herfoss to 24 points while Glenn Allerton took the lead over Cru Halliday in third place in the title chase.
The second race will start early on Sunday, at 08:30 (09:30 AEST) before the final 16 laps of the three-header at 13:10 (1340 AEST). The track temperature for the second race is likely to be 20 degrees cooler than what the drivers experienced in race one on Saturday, but Sunday afternoon’s race will likely have a similar 50 degrees. as in race one.
