As most people with eyes and ears can agree, Joe BidenHis performance at last night’s debate was a disaster of epic proportions. The president, who critics have spent years saying is too old for the job, looked, sounded and acted old. His voice was hoarse. His face seemed frozen at points. Most disturbingly, he seemed to lose his ability to think at times. When he had the chance to nail Donald Trump—like on abortion—he didn’t. Did he have some good moments? Yes, he recovered a little bit toward the end. But overall, it was a night of terror that left everyone who cared about the fate of the country/world/universe lying on the floor in the fetal position with no one able to get up.
But: Donald Trump is still Donald Trump. While Biden was struggling, Trump spent the night spewing his usual barrage of crazy, baseless lies, including but not limited to:
- Democrats claim to support “post-birth” abortion (which is actually called murder and no one supports it)
- The statement “everyone” wants Roe v. Wade overturned (the majority of Americans do not want it Fish eggs overturned)
- Claims he’s got us”get out of that COVID mess” (hundreds of thousands of Americans died while he was president, and COVID is still a huge problem)
- Claims that Biden will quadruple civil taxes (completely untrue)
- Claims Biden “fabricated” the story about him calling dead soldiers “stupid” and “losers” (this was reported by Atlantic, and former Trump chief of staff John Kelly confirm my comment)
- Claims Biden called Black people “super predators” during the 1990s (he didn’t)
- Claims Biden tried to remove Ukraine’s top prosecutor in 2016 in an effort to help his son (this claim is false since Trump and his allies began pushing it back in 2016) 2019)
- Claims there have been no terrorist attacks during his presidency (false)
- The January 6 request was Nancy Pelosi‘(come on)’s fault
- Claims that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election (nearly four years later, there really is no evidence of this no matter how many times he says it)
And, of course, beyond last night’s lies, the fact remains that Trump is a convicted felon who has vowed, among other things, to use the government to go after his enemies, waging an extreme war on immigration, taking no action against immigrants. gun control, encouraged Russia to attack NATO allies, fired career civil servants and replaced them with loyalists, pardoned those convicted on January 6, hunted down smugglers gender, allowing states to monitor individual pregnancies to punish abortionists and deprive schools of funding with vaccine requirements. And that’s just what he said publicly.
Democrats, understandably confused about last night’s events, are talking seriously about the prospect of replacing Biden on the ticket. And maybe it will happen! But if not, let’s be clear about what the alternative to electing Biden would be.
