Jodie Comer to make Broadway debut in ‘Prima Facie’ next spring

Jodie Comer, known for playing the charismatic assassin Villanelle on “Killing Eve”, which received rave reviews for her West End stage debut in one-woman play “Prima Facie.” Now she is setting her sights on Broadway.

Next spring, Comer will reprise her role, playing an attorney named Tessa who discovers the limitations of the law after being sexually assaulted, when the show hits Broadway at an uncharted Shubert theater to be announced. This will be her first Broadway performance.

The play, written by Suzie Miller, is currently in its final weeks of work in London’s West End. Critics praised Comer for her dizzying performance in an emotionally demanding role that, under Justin Martin’s busy choreography, made her quite physically fit. It calls for her to jump on furniture, endure a brief rain on stage and more as she tells the story of her work from her working-class origins and then being assaulted by a co-worker. career that she brought to trial.

“There is no denying the visceral power of a sold-out evening for a theater freshman with the know-how of a seasoned pro,” wrote Matt Wolf in his review for The New York Times.

The play originally premiered in 2019 in Miller’s native Australia. The playwright is a former human rights and child rights lawyer.

No date has been announced for the Broadway production, which will be directed by Martin. The main producer is Empire Street Productions, led by James Bierman.
