The New York Jets received some good news on Tuesday providing a bit more clarity on their midfield situation following By Zach Wilson wound.
Wilson underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and had a competitive “outside shot” in Week 1, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.
Also, there are no surprises during the surgery, so the original 2-4 week return schedule will stay the same, Rapoport added. The bone bruise will require Wilson, who fell in the first quarter of last week’s pre-season opener, to rest and get away from his feet. The Jets won’t play Wilson until he’s 100 percent, ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported.
With Wilson’s return unlikely to side him for a significant amount of time during the regular season, the Jets are expected to launch with redundancy. Joe Flacco is a temporary starter and will not yield external options such as 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo, Rapoport also reported.
Flacco didn’t play in the Jets’ opening game before last season Eagle last week. However, the veteran quarterback reported play well in training camp even before Wilson went down.
If Wilson can’t go in Week 1, Flacco will start against his former team: Baltimore Raven. Jets face Brown, Bengalsand Steelworker in the three weeks following Week 1, Flacco was capable of beating his old rivals.
Flacco appeared in two games against the Jets last season, completing 27 of 42 passes for three touchdowns and failing to intercept. The Jets are 0-5 in the five games that Flacco has started for them over the past two seasons.
