If you’ve ever seen a Jeep Wagoneer or Jeep Grand Wagoneer plodding along the road, You must have thought “Jeeze, that thing is so small.” Good friend, don’t be afraid, because Jeep has heard your criticism about its biggest bois and added seven inches to their wheelbase and over 12 inchesall for the birth of Wagoneer L.
Trademark launch these giant Jeeps at the New York Auto Show. The duo measures 226.7 inches in length to keep up with larger, longer-wheelbase SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade ESV at 226.9 inches and the Lincoln Navigator L at 221.9. The passenger compartment has not grown in size at all -WOMENL still offers the 179.2 cubic feet of space that the regular Wagoneer offers. Jeep says the extra Wagoneer legroom that customers get with the L is made up of cargo space behind the third row of seats.
That’s a whole lot of Jeeps that will be revealed during the historic gas price hike. Perhaps to counter that longer vehicle, Jeep also announced an all-new twin-turbo 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six that will be standard in the refreshed models. The new engine will shave off an mpg or two from the staggering figure of the existing V8, Jeep claims. But if saving money on a pump is your main concern, these giant boys aren’t for you. The Wagoneer’s current 6.4-liter V8 has been rated at 15 mpg combined, making it less efficient than the Escalade at 16 mpg or the Navigator at 17 mpg. It’s not even a competition when it comes to large European SUVs.
Jeep also brings a slain trim pack called the Wagoneer Carbide. It’s cool enough but definitely something we’ve seen brands bring to auto shows before. The black wheel and grill have lost their flavor after so many years of being the same. Not every car needs to be a Batmobile.
