Jayland Walker: American unarmed black motorcyclist shot and killed by police 46 times, discovered after autopsy | US News
According to a post-mortem report, an unarmed black motorcyclist was killed by police in Ohio, having been shot 46 times.
Jayland Walker, from Akron, suffered 41 wounds and 5 gunshot wounds that grazed him. About 26 bullets were recovered from his body.
Mr. Walker “had several serious injuries that could have resulted in death,” including injuries to the heart, lungs and arteries, said Dr. Lisa Kohler, Summit County medical examiner.
The coroner’s office was unable to determine whether a particular bullet killed him.
There were 15 bullet wounds to the torso, 17 shots to the pelvis and lower leg, one to the face, 8 to the right arm and hand, and 5 to the right knee, shin, and right foot.
Five wounds were on his back, but it was not possible to determine if it was when he was running away from officers or just moving his body, she added.
Dr Kohler’s autopsy revealed Mr Walker, 25, had no drugs or alcohol on him when he was fatally shot by police in a routine traffic stop in Akron on June 27.
Officers opened fire on him after they tried to drag him for a minor traffic violation and he fled.
Police said Mr Walker fired a bullet from his car 40 seconds after a minute-long car chase.
After the chase, Mr Walker jumped out of his car and ran away from officers, a video released by police showed.
Police said it appeared he was turning to officers, who at the time believed he was armed.
Body footage shows Mr Walker wearing a ski mask, exiting the front passenger door of his still-moving vehicle and then running into a parking lot where police opened fire.
The blurry footage does not clearly show what authorities said was a threatening gesture by Mr Walker before he was shot.
Police chased him for about 10 seconds before officers fired from multiple directions, in a salvo that lasted six or seven seconds.
No guns were found on Walker but one was found in his car, they said.
Eight officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into police use of force.
Since the incident, protesters have staged protests in the city calling for police to be held accountable for the shooting and demanding justice for Mr. Walker, whose funeral took place on Thursday. .
