Jared Kushner really doesn’t like the media.

Sitting across from me this week in a deluxe room at the Miami Beach Ritz-Carlton, I feel he’s a bit vulnerable, perhaps after the press speculated that he’d had to get a second round of treatment for him. thyroid cancer. Mr. Kushner’s face softens whenever he talks about his wife and their children, one of whom read poetry in Mandarin, presented to the Chinese President during Xi Jinping’s visit to Mar-a-Lago in 2017.

Mr. Trump’s Florida home made headlines again this month, as FBI agents reveal more about documents they recovered during a raid on historic palace. According to the agents, these people need special clearance to view them.

Mr. Kushner is sensitive on the subject, and treats the records as “paperwork”. Too loyal to his father-in-law, he is very quick to repeatedly criticize media coverage of a variety of topics, including the Mar-a-Lago raid, the 2020 election results – it has it been stolen; January 6 riots – how dangerous the vice president really is; and his relationship with the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia.

I object that the media is not always the bad guy. “Sometimes you’re worth it,” he said, “and sometimes maybe not.”

However, whenever the subject of his family came up, Mr. Kushner brought charm.

I wonder if his children will recognize their grandfather as the leader of the free world? They knew he had a large supply of chocolate in the Oval Office, he revealed.

Mr. Kushner also happily shares how the kids love his special recipe for fluffy pancakes: whipped up pretty good and sprinkled with chocolate.

When we finished the interview and stepped out onto the balcony, Mr. Kushner marveled at the breathtaking coastal views from the room. He pointed to his downtown office and gestured home to Miami, where the family moved after his defeat in the 2020 election.

“I know he’s obviously thinking about it,” he replied, adding: “I said (to him) you know, it’s hard.”

But despite my best efforts, Mr. Kushner refused to go any further.

I have only half an hour left, and Mr. Kushner shakes my hand firmly before heading out the door.

The former White House senior adviser is in the midst of a whirlwind of interviews given to mostly right-wing media to promote his memoir, Breaking History.
