House Select Committee investigates January 6 riots at US Capitol subpoenaed former President Donald Trump on Friday, and Vice President Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said Trump would not be able to turn his testimony into a “circus”.
“The committee takes this very seriously,” she told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “It can take days, and it will be done with the level of rigor and discipline and seriousness it deserves.”
The committee voted unanimously on the subpoena and is requesting related records and Trump’s testimony under oath next month.
“We recognize that subpoenaing a former president is a historic and significant act,” the panel’s leaders wrote to Trump in a letter Friday. Committee Chairs Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and Cheney cited what they called Trump’s central role in a deliberate “multipart effort” to reverse his defeat in the election. presidential election 2020.
The subpoena says Trump will be removed from office on November 14, after the midterm elections. It is unclear if he will comply.
Former White House aide Stephen Bannon is sentenced to four months in prison earlier on Friday for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the same committee. He’s still free pending.
Cheney said the committee has clarified what Trump’s obligations are and that they plan to proceed accordingly.
