It is official. Canelo Alvarez and arch rival Gennady Golovkin will fight for the third time. Matchroom announced on Tuesday that the match will end on September 17. “I feel very happy and proud to be able to deliver the best fights and this match will be no exception.” Canelo said via press release. Even though he lost to Dmitry Bivol a few weeks ago in Bivol’s light heavyweight title quest, Canelo is still arguably the man with the biggest draw in boxing. And since the first two matches between him and Golovkin were controversial, Canelo can expect a lot of attention to be devoted to this third first leg.
“The Canelo trio vs. GGG is the biggest fight in boxing and I’m delighted it’s happening on September 17th,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Here are two men who bitterly dislike each other and want to end this incredible series with a blistering KO.” As a promoter, Hearn will definitely try to promote the match. “I truly believe this will be the most intense battle between these two great champions,” he said, “and it will be cannonball from the first bell to the last man standing.”
