Are you a coffee lover looking to combine your coffee fangs and coffees at a nearby Starbucks? If you’re wondering if Starbucks is dog-friendly, the answer is yes – but with limitations.
Does Starbucks allow dogs in?
Dogs are not allowed in Starbucks stores. Unless your dog is a service dog, they cannot enter Starbucks’ in-house restaurant.
That said, Starbucks is a dog-friendly restaurant within the limits set forth by state health rules. Overall, the patio areas of every Starbucks we’ve been to are welcoming to welcome dogs.
Dogs are allowed in the Starbucks OUTDOOR patio area, if the store has an outdoor patio. If Starbucks is inside a grocery store, your dog cannot enter.
You’ll even find a dog treat on Starbucks’ “secret menu”! The Puppuccino is a small cup of ice cream (no coffee!) that dogs love. They are free on request in the restaurant or at the drive-through window.

Yes, dogs are allowed in the outdoor patio area at most Starbucks stores.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: always call ahead if you haven’t visited a particular place in a while. Local regulations may prohibit outdoor dining in some communities. We always recommend calling first; test store locator for the phone number and address of your local Starbucks.
In Texas, the Health and Safety Code regulations for dogs in outdoor dining areas state:
(a) A food service business may allow a customer to walk a dog in an outdoor dining area if: (1) the establishment places a sign in a conspicuous position within the permitted area keep dogs; (2) customers and dogs accessing the area directly from the outside of the establishment; (3) dogs do not enter the premises; (4) the customer keeps the dog on a leash and controls the dog; (5) the customer does not leave the dog on a chair, table, table top, or similar surface; and (6) in the area, the establishment does not: (A) process food; or (B) allow food to be opened in addition to the food being served to the customer.
Starbucks meets all of those criteria, so we’re happy to announce that every Starbucks we’ve visited in our hometown welcomes yard dogs.

Why can’t dogs enter the house at Starbucks?
Dogs cannot enter a Starbucks — or any other restaurant in the United States — because the food has already been served. Health department regulations for each state prohibit dogs in indoor eating areas.
Does Starbucks allow service dogs?
Yes, a trained service dog required to assist you is allowed into any Starbucks store under Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA):
Service animals are defined as dogs that are specifically trained to do work or perform duties for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or duties include instructing the blind, warning the deaf, towing a wheelchair, warning and protecting a person having a seizure, reminding a mentally ill person take medication as prescribed, calm a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or perform other tasks. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The job or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.

A few years ago, a Starbucks customer with a service dog got into trouble at a Starbucks location, causing statement by Joe Thornton, senior vice president of Starbucks division: “Starbucks always welcomes service animals to our store, and we want every customer to take the time to come to our store to enjoy their visit. “
Please note that the term “service dog” includes ONLY trained service dogs; It does not include emotional support dogs.
If your dog is not a trained service dog, do not try to misrepresent your dog as a service dog. Depending on where you live, misrepresent your dog as a service dog may be fined up to $1000.
