Is Canon Planning Another Special Lens?

Canon launched as they entered the full-frame mirrorless camera market, with one of their most impressive lenses being the RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM, the first full-frame autofocus zoom lens with an f/2 aperture. This led many to hope that other f/2 zoom lenses might eventually be made available and that their wishes might come true.

Canon Rumors is reporting that Canon is planning another f/2 RF lens to “complement” the RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM. I’ve been using the 28-70mm f/2 for about two years and I can attest that it’s an absolutely stunning lens capable of doing everything no other option can. It’s amazing how it has replaced several other primes in my pocket and is my top pick.

The focal length range of the lens is rumored to be unknown, though it will likely be announced at some point early next year. If I had to guess, I’d assume it’s something similar to the 70-135mm f/2 lens. Any focal length beyond 135mm will start to make the lens too heavy and unwieldy for general use, while the f/2 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens will likely become a bit too niche to sell. I can see the 70-135mm f/2 lens being extremely popular among portrait, wedding and indoor sports photographers, to name a few. Hopefully, we’ll hear more soon!
