Instant classics: Amanda Serrano wins after bloody fight with Erika Cruz
By: Sean Crose
The world’s undisputed women’s featherweight championship took place Saturday night at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater as 43-2-1 boxer Amanda Serrano pitted Erika Cruz 15-1 for the top spot. division senior. Cruz started aggressive first while Serrano maneuvered to take control of the ring. Cruz continued to throw hard and heavy in the second inning. A head collision caused Cruz to bleed a lot in the third round.
The fourth goal was a complete slugfest and was very difficult to score. It was a really interesting match. There was no doubt that Serrano was in a real war. The blistering season five sees Cruz’s face covered in her own blood. However, the fight was very close, containing almost non-stop action. Serrano delivered a furious and seemingly endless series of hits in the sixth round, sending Cruz literally wobbling. However, Cruz survived the round.
Saturday is a classic. Each woman fired furious shots at the other. Hagler-Hearns round a level tool. Serrano was largely able to stay out of Cruz’s range in season eight – then again, Cruz might not be able to see particularly well due to the blood trickling down and covering her face.
Things were still tense in the ninth round as Serrano landed cleanly and Cruz continued to advance. The tenth and final round was a bloody and explosive series of gunfights. Cruz knelt in her corner, completely exhausted, after the last ring. Certainly a lot of blood was lost.
Serrano left with a decisive victory.
