Rule one of the following boxing:

Unless it’s written, treat it like a grain of salt. Maybe two or three beads.

That’s why it’s important not to get too breathless when you hear things like the recent rumors that Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia are about to sign to fight. We heard that about Errol Spence and Terrance Crawford recently, if I’m not mistaken. Speaking of Spence and Crawford, promoter Eddie Hearn believes that, despite their hopes for a fight that may have been – or probably still will – a Davis-Garcia fight could prove to be a bigger one. .

“Perhaps, to be honest, a bigger war,” Hearn said to DAZN Boxing show of a showdown in Davis-Garcia, “but they don’t need Spence-Crawford’s money.” In other words, more for less. “I’m telling you,” continued Matchroom’s Honcho, “Ryan Garcia against the Davis Tank was a monster battle. If I spend money, for either of those games, I’ll pay for the Tank vs Ryan Garcia. That’s where I’m putting my neck first. Garcia was advertised by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotion while Davis was advertised by Floyd Mayweather’s Mayweather promotion.

While most people would argue that Spence and Crawford are still two of the top, if not the top two boxers in the world, Hearn feels that light boxers Davis and Garcia, both two younger boxers, generally more accessible to the public. “Two different fan bases,” Hearn said of Garcia and Davis, “are very powerful on social media. Another very excited, argumentative kid is that the bigger the fight, the bigger the draw. “All of this comes from what Hearn recently said FightHub that “the biggest battle in the (lightweight) division by miles was Tank (Davis) against Ryan Garcia.” While purists might prefer a light-hearted chess championship match between Devin Haney and Vasyl Lomachenko, Hearn feels that, like with Spence and Crawford, Davis and Garcia possess more of those elements.

Hearn said of the Davis-Garcia match (remember it was a grain of salt), “I hear, like you hear, it’s one of the biggest fights in the sport.” Key point? Hearn knows which of these sentences he says when he talks about boxing. They may be as cool as Spence, Crawford, Lomacenko and Haney, but they’re not as exciting as Davis and Garcia. And the excitement can spread, even beyond boxing’s general fan base.
